BaBeeCard

BabeeCard smalll banner
A debit card designed for Mums.

The BaBeeCard is a rather cute idea.  It is aimed at mums and mums to be (although anyone can make good use of it).  It acts like a MasterCard - in fact it is a MasterCard - but it is slightly different.  It is not a "credit" card but rather a prepaid "debit" card.  You simply cannot get into that well known rut of spending more than you can afford.  It seems odd that a profit making financial company should work so hard to help you not spend more money than you can afford but then there was the "credit crunch".  The advantage to you is that you get discount at over 100 retailers if you use the BaBeeCard.

The way it works is that you pay a fee for the card each year.  It amounts to about £1 per month.  Then when you buy stuff at a number of retailers you get between 5% and 20% discount on your purchase.  So long as you are expecting or able to purchase stuff from retailers who support the scheme then you are easily quids in.  There are fees for replacing lost cards or withdrawing cash etc. but with care this card really can be a boost to your finances.  It is primarily aimed at mothers with much of the discount available at children's stores and web sites like BabyWorld.com and MotherCare as well as shops who sell lots of baby things like Debenhams and John Lewis.

As I write in October 2009 on an average shop of £300 per month on groceries you would save £15 a month if you shop at ASDA or Sainsbury's with a 5% discount and you would save £24 a month if you shop at Waitrose with an 8% discount.

Here is a collection of shops and places involved in the scheme and you can find out more specific details when you join their club:

• Boots • Sainsburys • Asda • Waitrose • Debenhams • John Lewis • Argos • M&S • MotherCare • House of Fraser • The White Company • Abel & Cole • GAP • Ocado.com • JoJo Maman Bebe • Top Shop • Selfidges • Peacocks • Boden • Natural Collection • Comet • Babyworld.com • everydaymaternity.com • thebabycatalogue.com • eurocamp • Canvas Holidays • Green & Blacks • Alton Towers • Buyagift • Carphone Warehouse • JJB Sports • Halfords • H.Samuel • Hard Rock Café • Homebase • HMV • Legoland • WH Smith •

Gemma Johnson is the entrepreneurial mother who masterminded the BaBeeCard and she was voted Mum-Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009 at a national awards ceremony sponsored by the Women's Business Mastermind Network for this idea.  The BaBeeCard's main benefits are that it gives users access to an extensive range of discounts from a number of supermarkets and high street retailers, and that family and friends can top up the card.  It also comes with a "Moneyback Promise" which guarantees that If you have not saved the cost of your card in a year, then you will get back your £9.95*.  The card is only available in the UK and can save you £500 or £1000 per year.
